Which basketball leagues and markets can you bet on?
PH sportsbooks commonly list the PBA, the NBA, college leagues like the UAAP during its season, and international games under FIBA (World Cup, Asia Cup, qualifiers). Coverage varies by book and by week, so check the sportsbook itself — our Bet88 sports betting guide shows where to look.
| Market | What you're betting on | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline (1X2 or 12) | Who wins the game | Team A at 1.55, Team B at 2.45 |
| Handicap / spread | Winner after a points head start | Team A −5.5 at 1.90: must win by 6+ |
| Total (over/under) | Combined points of both teams | Over 205.5 at 1.90 |
| Quarter / half bets | Moneyline, spread or total for one period | 1st half Team B +2.5 |
| Player props | An individual stat line | Player X over 24.5 points |
| Parlay (multi) | Several picks combined; all must win | Three sides at 1.90 = 6.86 |
Overtime: full-game basketball markets usually include overtime, but quarter and half markets don't. Always check the market's rules. A .5 on a line means no push is possible; a whole-number line like −4 refunds your stake if the margin is exactly 4.
How do decimal odds and the bookmaker margin work?
Decimal odds show your total return per ₱1, stake included. ₱100 at 1.90 returns ₱190 if it wins (₱90 profit).
Implied probability = 1 ÷ odds. At 1.90 that's 1 ÷ 1.90 ≈ 52.6%. In a fair two-way market, both sides would add to 100% — 2.00 / 2.00. But books price both sides at 1.90:
| Side | Odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Team A −5.5 | 1.90 | 52.6% |
| Team B +5.5 | 1.90 | 52.6% |
| Total (overround) | 105.3% |
That extra 5.3% is the book's built-in margin (often called the vig or juice). The practical meaning: you need to win 52.6% of 1.90 bets just to break even. Pick at a coin-flip 50% rate and you lose about 5% of everything you stake.
Uneven lines work the same: Team A 1.55 (64.5%) + Team B 2.45 (40.8%) = 105.3%. Want the full explanation with fractional and American odds too? See how to read betting odds.
What does a ₱500 PBA handicap bet look like in pesos?
- The bet: ₱500 on Team A −4.5 at 1.90.
- Team A wins by 5 or more: you get ₱950 back — ₱450 profit.
- Team A wins by 4 or less, or loses: you lose ₱500.
- If the line were truly 50/50: expected value = 0.5 × ₱450 − 0.5 × ₱500 = −₱25 per bet, or −5% of stake.
- Parlay version: three 1.90 legs pay 1.90 × 1.90 × 1.90 ≈ 6.86. If each leg is truly 50/50, all three win 12.5% of the time; fair odds would be 8.00. Expected value = 0.125 × 6.86 − 1 ≈ −14.3%. Parlays stack the margin on every leg.
Do hot streaks, "locks" or doubling up beat the bookie?
- "Five straight overs — sure over ulit." Lines move to reflect recent scoring. Past results are already priced in; the next game isn't "due" anything.
- "Lock of the day" tipsters. Nobody hits 70% long-term against a 5% margin. Paid tip groups that show only their wins are selling subscriptions, not edges. Ingat sa fake agents na nag-aalok ng "fixed games".
- Martingale on spreads. Double a ₱500 bet through six straight losses and your seventh bet is ₱32,000 — and at 1.90 even that win (₱28,800 profit) doesn't cover the ₱31,500 already lost. One bad week ends the system.
- "Favorites always win." Short odds mean low payouts; a 1.20 favorite has to win more than 83% of the time just to break even.
- Big parlays as a "small risk, big win". Each leg adds the margin. Long parlays are the most expensive bets on the board.
